It's my anniversary!

Tomorrow my hubby and I have been married for six years. We almost NEVER get to go do anything together. This time, he surprised me. He saved up a little money without me knowing and his mom and my mom will be babysitting tomorrow and we're going to spend the whole day in LA and Hollywood. It's funny, we've lived in California for 4.5 years but we've never spend the day there. We've never walked Sunset or looked at the stars on the Walk of Fame. Tomorrow that's what we'll be doing all day! We're getting up early and heading out. We'll grab some breakfast and then hit Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum, Wax Museum and The Guinness Book of World Records Museum. After that, depending on them time, we'll then do some touristy walk around kind of stuff. I want to the Walk of Fame, Hollywood Rock walk and just take in some fun things the city has to offer. We'll head to the Grove Farmers market where from what I hear, you almost always spot a celebrity or two. We'll have lunch. My friend who lives there told me about a little restaurant/bar that has half priced drinks and meals and drinks until 7:00 PM everyday. She mentioned getting both fish and chips and baby back ribs for 6-7 dollars which you can't beat. We'll do a little more walking around and then, just because I'm a dork, I want to walk Rodeo Drive. I'll never be able to afford anything there, but I've always wanted to check it out.

I can't tell you how excited I am. Both our moms work, his mom has two jobs so they aren't able to babysit often. I don't think we've done anything on our anniversary for about three years. We need a day for the two of us SO bad. We've been together almost 11 years, and married six and I still completely love him. I can't wait to have a day devoted to us.

Excerpt of Wanting Mia:
“Oh my God.” Mia Hamilton spun around on the bar stool so her back faced the door.

“What’s wrong?” Evie asked concern lacing her voice as Mia plopped her elbows on the counter and ruffled her curly brown hair to shield her face. Hopefully he wouldn’t see her. Maybe she could hide behind her mess of curls. “He’s here.”

Evie frowned at her. “I forgot my secret decoder ring at home, girl. You’re going to have to tell me who he is.”

He just happened to be a man she’d propositioned for sex a short two months ago. When she and Evie passed their bar exams they’d come to Big Bear California for a decadent weekend. They’d planned to reward themselves for all their hard work with a fling.

Evie’s weekend, which Mia really was happy about, turned into a serious relationship. Mia on the other hand accosted a man who turned her down because he had a woman at home.

That was all fine and dandy when she never had to see him again. No harm, no foul, they walked out of each other’s lives and she didn’t have to feel like a floozy who tried to get an unknown man to spend the weekend with her. Seeing him again changed everything.

“Antonio.” Mia tried to peek over her shoulder and didn’t seem him. When she glanced back at Evie she looked lost.

“The guy I tried to have my fling with. Tall, gorgeous Latino boy toy. Ring any bells?”

Evie opened her mouth to reply but when she did, a different voice permeated the air around them. One much more masculine with an accent attached.

“So you think I’m gorgeous?”

He took the open stool next to her. When he did the scent of clean, fresh man tickled her senses. His short, black hair rested flat on his head. He had dark, golden skin, a chiseled square jaw, and ice blue eyes sharp enough to slice right through her.

“Maybe I wasn’t talking about you.” Mia looked at him, not flinching while inside trying to calm not only her nerves but the overwhelming attraction her body felt for this man.

“Ah, but maybe you were. My bet is on the latter.”

A light laugh sounded behind her but Mia ignored her friend. She’d pay her back later. Right now she had to deal with Mr. Cocky, walking, talking sex on a stick in a pair of faded jeans and a long sleeved black t-shirt.

“A betting man, huh?” Mia tried to play it cool. “You might want to walk away from this one while you’re ahead. I’d hate to see you go home empty handed.”

“You and me both. I’m here for a reason. I want a chance to have what I gave up two months ago.”

At the same time, desire swept through her leaving her sensitive body on edge, and anger grated on her nerves. Who did this guy think he was? Better yet who did he think she was? Sure she made herself look easy by the way she offered herself on a platter the last time they met but he should give her some credit. He’d not only turned her down but told her he had a woman. Did he think she’d be here waiting for him when he came back? Forget the part where she actually was sitting here because she wasn’t waiting for him. “Hmm, funny, I don’t recall offering you a rain check. I’m sure your girlfriend would love it if she knew you were here trying to score with me.”

“I don’t have a girlfriend. I was here because my relationship was on the rocks. I needed a weekend to evaluate where we stood. I turned you down because I wanted to make a decision without any outside influence. I made that decision. And now I’m back for the woman who hasn’t left my thoughts since that night.”

Holy freakin cow! Mia couldn’t believe he sat here trying to get in her pants like she’d just jump at the offer. Even though her body really wanted her to, things were different now. This wasn’t some planned out weekend fling. The time for that kind of frivolous fun ended when he said no. “You have some nerve. What do thing you can just sit here smile and offer me a roll in the sack and I’m going to say yes? What kind of woman do you think I am?”

“What kind of man did you think I was when you wanted the same thing from me? Not to mention I don’t remember saying I just wanted a weekend with you. I said I wanted a chance at what I lost two months ago. A time limit wasn’t part of my proposition.”

Every nerve ending in her body tingled. Antonio really got to her. Those sea blue eyes and his sinewy body inspired all sorts of sexy dreams over the last two months. And now here he was in the flesh and she couldn’t help but want to jump at his offer. Even if he was arrogant. Hell, she hated to admit it but his arrogance fueled her craving for him even more. Still, she lived here now. She wasn’t the type to bring strange men home and she could only imagine the rumors that would fly around if she got a room in her own damn town. Plus a new phase of her life started since she’d seen him last. She was a lawyer now, she had responsibilities that didn’t include him. “Listen, I don’t have time for games, Antonio. You’re not going to find what you’re looking for with me.”

“Aw, but I have.” She exhaled a heavy breath. Her heart pounded in her chest. “What is it you want?” “I’d thought that would be obvious. I want you, Mia.”

Caution: Road Work Ahead

If my life were a street you could pretty much guarantee there would always be a sign that read: Caution Road Work Ahead. I think we're pretty much all works in progress. That's life, right? We don't have all the answers and even though some times I wish I did, things wouldn't be quite as exciting would they?

Today I want to talk about writing roadblocks. I think most of us have them. Whether or not its procrastination, fear of failure or just plain ole self doubt I think most of us all deal with these little road blocks on our writing road. For me, it started with time. I've loved writing since I saw a child scribbling in my trapper keeper but as I grew up I worked a full time job and just never had the time to write. In some ways, that may have been just an excuse, could have been my fear of failure sneaking in, maybe a little bit of self doubt thrown in but at the time I blamed it on time.

Finally I had the time, and built up the courage to take it and started writing. Honestly, things went pretty quickly for me from starting my first book to my first publication but that doesn't mean I don't face road blocks with each and every book I write. One of mine is still time because even though I don't work outside the home, my kids and household keep me pretty damn busy. But I want it enough that I bulldoze that roadblock right out of my way.

I do have a confession to make though. With each book, each submission, each contract, and especially every book that is released I have a HUGE fear of failure. It's a hurdle I face every time. I get stressed before submission. Check my email fifty times a day after submission expecting that big R we all hate to see. When I get my edits, I'm always freaking out that my editor wonder why in the hell they ever contracted my book. When a new book comes out I sweat bullets, scared to death I'll let my readers down. For me, it doesn't get easier but guess what? I keep going. What makes me? Hell, I don't know. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment. All I know is I HAVE to keep going. I might fear failure but isn't it automatically a fail if you don't try?

What kinds of roadblocks do you face in your writing? If your not a writer, what about road blocks in your every day life? Your job? What makes you keep plugging along?

Connecting with characters

The other day my mom and I were talking about some our favorite books that have been turned into movies. Of course there are always going to be differences in a movie compared to a book. That's a given but what I find fascinating, is even though I know that, my reaction to the movie, or the characters. I really like the Twilight books. Though I did enjoy the movie, it didn't come close to doing the book justice, IMO. The funny part is, throughout the show, I could remember myself say things like, "Edward would never have done that". I back peddled a little bit. I'm not crazy, I swear. I KNOW this guy is a fictional character so why am I sitting here angry because the movie version of my character did or said something that book Edward, "never would have done"?

That got me thinking of the magic of a good character. To me, that is the power of a good book. I love getting so wrapped up in the characters, their story and their HEA that they feel real to me. I love that kind of emotional fulfillment. I'm investing hours into reading a book and even more time into writing one and to really connect with a character is the best reward.

That's another reason I love a good series because I feel like I'm revisiting friends. I get to check in with them after their story is "finished". The best way for an author to get her hooks into me is powerful characters that I can truly connect with, whether or not I have things in common with them. But if I can...bond with them then I'm sold.

Who are some of your favorite characters that you've connected with? Do you reread their story over and over just to feel the pull of being carried into their world? What is it that makes you connect with a character?
